New earrings for me!

I have pierced ears and I have large holes in my ears. I can wear 10 gauge wire in my ears. I ripped my ears when I was younger wearing very heavy earrings all of the time, hey it was the 70's, it was what we did. My favorite pair of earrings were from India, made out of brass about 12 gauge square wire and had at least 200 tiny little beads wired on the dangles which were at least 2 inches high and wide... big! I was told by a piercer that if I wore a heavier gauge wire that they would not rip anymore. He was right and they are good.

I wear captured bead hoops all of the time. They are plain and when you get up to the thicker wires they are heavier than standard ear wires. Mine are not that thick, they are heavier though.
They are hard to change because the ball snaps in to the ends of the wire.
Well, I have been wearing these plain ear wires for years.
I wanted something a little different to wear. I never wear my clay earrings anymore and that was all I used to wear. So I made myself some dangles to add to the wires.

I love these, they are about 2mm thick and very, very light so I can wear them with the captured ball earrings. They 1 3/4" high and 1" wide.
New earrings, yes!
All they are is thin slices of Skinner shaded cane placed in to decorative pattern with African Trade bead slices on them. They weigh less than the hoops.
I am testing them out now!

  1. Marie, I had to laugh at your "big ear holes!!" I have the same thing and I too wore heavy earrings back in the late 60's 70's, 80's, 90's and not so much anymore!! LOL Weren't those Indian earrings fabulous?? I had 4 pair left over from my "youth," and I gave them to my daughter and niece. My niece wears "Mango" earrings now, so she might get the rest of my stuff. I have some gorgeous Navajo turquoise earrings that hang to the shoulder...I'm afraid I'm a bit too long in the tooth for those now, I'd look like a "crazier" ol' lady, since I'm already crazy!! LOL

I love those earrings, they're gorgeous...your work is sublime!! Have a great weekend.

    xxoo,

  2. Love the earrings you made yourself! Clay is deceptively light so you get the size/style you enjoy without further enlarging your earlobes. Did that come out right?! LOL! Have a great weekend.

  3. I always thought I had stretched mine from the *Killer-70's* chandeliers we wore, and purchased a beautiful pair of silver, India made earrings.
I FINALLY found wires too thick for my ears! (and if I still had them, I'd send them to you)
    Love your danglies!!!

    XXOO~~

    Wishing you a wonderful weekend!

  5. Ya they were huge earrings and then came the 8o's with huge earrings too.
Shoulder dusters, giant clay earrings, indian (dot and feather) jewelry and all of that.
I had some very nice turquoise earrings too, with silver and I liked them big too! Not to forget the safety pins and other things I wore in my ears. Not allergic to a thing. LOL!
I figure as long as people think I am nuts, I might as well make them happy they are right.
You don't look crazy to me, you look normal!!
Being an artist all my life has been wonderful for that, there is not much I can do to prove I am normal, so I might as well have fun with it!

  6. I still wear shoulder dangling ear bobs. I have the opposite problem, though, my ear holes are tiny. I recently had to return a really cute pair of earrings...wires too large. I did want to mention that when I first saw the picture, I thought it was Thanksgiving Turkeys made into earrings. Take care and have a great weekend.

It did come out right. Perfect!
    Have a great weekend yourself!

  8. The piercer that I talked to said the wires were thinner then and that the heavy earrings cut the earlobe that and heavy disco dancing and the shaking of the head! ;-D
    Thanks Anne!!

  10. What a bummer you had to return them. Can't you just switch wires off the earrings that are small enough on to the ones that are too big?
    Are thanksgiving turkeys black?
Oh, you are right, I guess they are black especially after I make them!!
    ;-D

  11. LOL! I love all the earring history here, Marie! Maybe we need to form a club of some kind. I wear small silver hoops now, and not much else. I'm thinking of converting some of my other earrings into necklaces. Love your new earrings - I hope they work for you! xox Pam

  13. I think there are a lot of women who can relate to the big hole in the ears thing because of the fads of the 70's. My girlfriend Sharon has one ear lobe that is half gone because of her big ear rings.
Love this pair here that you are sharing with us. They are really lovely
Have been over a few times in the past weeks but have not been able to leave a comment.
    Hope this one goest through
    Love

  14. Very cool earrings! How wonderful that you can design your own. You can make something to match every outfit you own!

I know a few young men who wear dime-size disks in their earlobes. I don't know how that became the fashion. It just looks odd.

  16. Mine are big holes too, but from kids pulling on them all of the time when they were little. My hoops just spin around in the holes. Love your earrings, a terrific idea!

  21. Yay Maggie, thanks for coming by and you did make it through. I hope all is well with you.
How awful that your friend ripped her ear.
Now those are some heavy earrings.

  22. Thanks Bella. That is an advantage of working in polymer clay.
In the 80's all my outfits and earrings, necklaces and bracelets used to match. I still have some of those, they are a riot and huge!
I like those small plugs in men's ears. I do know a couple of people that have huge ones and those are not my favorite. But to each his own right? If we were all the smae this sure would be boring place.
    Thank goodness for diversity.

  23. Thanks Ces!

You must have never worn giant earrings in your youth then.
It is nice that you didn't stretch your ears out!

  24. Kids doing that will make them larger Dede for sure. Also loose knit sweaters, towels, and t-shirts pulled off the head quickly. LOL!!

  27. Ya knowI must have gotten lucky because I wore those huge earrings yet my holes are too small for a lot of earrings. I really wish that they were larger but they keep trying to close on me.

Regardless, I love the earrings. I tend to just wear hoops so these are such a great idea.
